Nicolas contributes to the work of SIL International, a world-wide NGO doing language-based development for lesser-known language communities worldwide through linguistic research, translation and literacy. He has lots to learn, but in the meantime he contributes to i18n projects, especially in the area of collaborative open font design, script technologies and release engineering.

He co-authored the community-approved Open Font License with Victor Gaultney.

He maintains and helps with various open font projects and related software and dreams of the day where any language and script, even the more complex ones, will work nicely on widely available devices allowing every user to enjoy them in their own mother-tongue and alphabet.
